About Self-Injury Awareness Day

The actual beginning of Self-injury Awareness Day (SIAD) is not known, but this special day is celebrated as Self-Injury Awareness Month (March) in the United States of America and Canada. Self-Injury Awareness Day (SIAD) is celebrated yearly on March 1 for the purpose of eliminating the stigma attributed to self-injury as well as encouraging parents, family members, educators, and healthcare professionals to acknowledge the signs of self-harm.

Self-harm is considered a disease that can happen to any person not only among teenage or young adulthood. One of the main reasons behind self-injury is depression and according to statistics, up to 2 million people in the United States alone are diagnosed with self-injury disease. Most often these people inflicted self-harm by cutting, burning or scratching the skin, and hitting themselves and breaking bones, along with other more harmful methods that they can think of. Most of them are frequently left alone and that is why they need support and treatment as the disease can always lead to suicidal behavior due to fear of being labelled as crazy by the people surrounding them.
