About World Theatre Day

The effort to initiate World Theatre Day was done by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1961 for the purpose of celebrating all the peoples that values and appreciate the importance of the art form “theatre”. ITI is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1948 by UNESCO and the international theatre community. World Theatre Day also represent as a wake-up-call not only to the relevant bodies, but also to the government, politicians and institutions that still does not realize the value of “theatre” and the individual involved as well as the true potential for economic growth of “theatre”.

Hence since then, 1962 March 27 was established as World Theatre Day that are celebrated annually by ITI Centres, ITI Cooperating Members, theatre professionals, theatre organizations, theatre universities and the international theatre community throughout the world. To mark this auspicious moment, various local and world-class theatre events are organized and one of the most significant and remembered by all is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message where ITI will invite famous world figure to share his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace. In 1962, Jean Cocteau of France wrote the first World Theatre Day International Message. Then, on June 1961 during the 9th World Congress of the ITI in Vienna, President Arvi Kivimaa proposed on behalf of the Finnish Centre of the International Theatre Institute to institute World Theatre Day, which was supported by the Scandinavian Centres.

Activities you can do on World Theatre Day

There are various activities you can do on World Theatre Day organized either locally or internationally as well. All events organized with the sole purpose of garnering interest among the public to theatre and its community involved. Theatre play can be an enjoyable time for you to spend some time with your friends or family members.

In addition, theatres and dance institutions, performing arts universities, government institutions and ministries of cultures can be directly involve in paying tribute or appreciation to a good playwright through Special Theatre Award Ceremonies, as well as organizing a theatre festival or theatre schools and colleges during the celebration of World Theatre Day.
Promotion of World Theatre Day can be made via social media, such as YouTube, blog, Facebook, twitter, Instagram etc., which can be easily be viewed by people from all walks of life throughout the world. We can also collaborate with ITI Centres, Cooperating Members and friends in conveying World Theatre Day Message to the media like radio, TV or press. We can introduce new author to the theatre industry with interviews or video conference.
