About World Kidney Day

World Kidney Day was commenced by the joint committee of “International Society of Nephrology (ISN)” and “International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF)” with the purpose of raising global awareness and the importance of kidney health among the public as well as reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems. Health organizations throughout the world organize various campaigns related to kidney diseases and factors that leads to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), complications and its prevention and cure all across the world.
World Kidney Day was established in 2006 with support coming from 66 countries and the support increased to 88 after 2 years it was introduced. It is commemorated all over the world annually on 2nd Thursday of March. As for the year 2018, it will be celebrated on 8th of March with the theme chosen for the year is “Kidneys & Women’s Health”.

The main objectives for celebrating World Kidney Day includes educating the public on key risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), which are diabetes and high blood pressure, to encourage systematic screening for patients, who are diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension for CKD, to encourage preventive behaviours and also to encourage Kidney Transplant as a best-outcome alternative as well as supporting organ donation.

World Kidney Day is celebrated each year throughout the globe with hundreds of events organized to commemorate the day for the sole purpose of creating awareness. It is important for Kidney national associations, organizations, kidney health stakeholders, healthcare professionals, government and individuals to collaborate during World Kidney Day in organizing various local, national or international level events so that we help the public in learning more about kidney treatments as well as the preventative measures that can be taken.
