About World Radio Day

Radio has been the most common channel for exchanging information since more than 100 years ago. It is capable of providing social interchange and at the same time educating people from all walks of life globally. It has managed to assist people, which includes the younger generation, to get involved in discussions, especially related to topics that affect their lives. Radio was also made as a platform by journalists to channel all facts and relate current stories to the public.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed 13 February as the World Radio Day and on 14 January 2013, the United Nations General Assembly officially endorsed UNESCO’s proclamation of World Radio Day. The effort was made possible during the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly, which endorsed the resolution (UNESCO 36 C/Resolution 63; A/RES/67/124) adopted during the 36th session of the UNESCO General Conference, proclaiming 13 February as World Radio Day. 13th February was chosen because on this date in 1946, United Nations Radio was established.

It is celebrated throughout the world in order to get the public to celebrate the radio as a medium for educating people, creating awareness on the importance of radio, an information provider as well as a way for encouraging freedom of expression among different cultures. World Radio Day also managed to improve global collaboration among radio broadcasters as well as enhancing their networking, plus also encouraging decision-makers to create and provide access to information simply through radio.

“Radio and Sports” has been chosen as the theme for World Radio Day 2018 to coincide with several major sporting events that will be organized internationally. All these sporting events have the ability to unite global population from all walks of life no matter where they are via traditional sports that associate various cultural heritage within our communities. Through World Radio day, radio stations and listeners alike can be involved in constructive programs and conversations through sub-themes, such as Radio and Sports build and unite communities; Radio and Sports inspires participation and inclusion, plus Radio fosters goodwill and inspires humanity.

Things you can do on World Radio Day

There are various kinds of things you can do on World Radio Day every year, as UNESCO always planned lots of interesting events organized together with broadcasters, organizations and communities worldwide. UNESCO urges all countries worldwide to observe World Radio Day by organizing activities together with broadcasting partners whether national, regional or international; organizations and non-governmental organizations, media organizations, outlets and last but not least the public.

Other events that you can participate on World Radio Day includes promotion of the celebration via the usage of social media, annual themes, providing a dedicated website in order to enable virtual participation of listeners, special radio programs, radio programs exchange or even a Radio festival.
